Thank you to everyone who came to our 20th Anniversary Celebration and Fundraiser!
We celebrated on November 30th with around 350 people in attendance. We appreciate your support for NNNN throughout the years. The event was dedicated to Elvira Arellano in honor of her struggle for the rights of the immigrant community. Congressman Luis Gutierrez was featured as the keynote speaker in recognition of his years of service to the community in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Chicago City Council. The Board of Directors also recognized the following individuals and groups for their contributions to NNNN and the community at large: Joy Aruguete, Executive Director of Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation; Evette Cardona, Senior Program Officer of the Polk Bros. Foundation; Alberto Carrero, Senior Vice President of Banco Popular North America; Miguel Palacio, Associate Director of Association House of Chicago; Allen Rodriguez, Senior Vice President of Charter One Bank; and Paul Roldan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Hispanic Housing Development Corporation.
We held a Housing Summit on November 3rd, 2007 beginning with a rally and a march from the "La Crucifixion de Don Pedro Albizu Campos" mural on North and Artesian over to the Humboldt Park Fieldhouse where Dr. Mindy Thompson Fullilove, author of "Root Shock: How Tearing Up City Neighborhoods Hurts America, and What We Can Do About It" spoke in a panel discussion on the psychological and emotional effects of displacement due to gentrification. Other speakers in the panel discussion included: Joy Aruguete, Executive Director of Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, Juanita Irizarry, former Executive Director of Latinos United, and Dr. Jose Lopez, Executive Director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center and a professor at Northeastern University. After the panel discussion, participants joined breakout discussions on the topics of renters’ rights, homeownership, and gentrification and community.
